This retreat takes this concept a step further by incorporating emotional intelligence and mindfulness, helping you shed not only physical weight but also emotional weight.

Welcome to Guesthouse by the Lake, a picturesque getaway nestled on the tranquil shores of Lake Tawakoni, Texas. Our charming retreat offers an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting you to unwind and reconnect with nature in the most serene setting imaginable.  The retreat experience seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment, creating a harmonious blend of comfort and natural beauty.  Guesthouse by the Lake offers a range of amenities, including kayaks and paddleboards for exploring the lake, as well as outdoor activities such as a pool with waterslide, cornhole, axe throwing, or poolside movie. In the evening, gather around the fire pit to share stories, laugh, and play under the starlit sky, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

I am a single mom and like most moms out there, I always put myself last, but I have always been okay with that. I tried through the years to lose weight on my own. I tried different diet plans and I tried working out, but I found it hard to be consistent. No matter how hard I tried and how successful I felt during the day, when the night came and I put the kids to bed after an exhausting day of working full time, errands and other obligations, I turned to the one thing that could always give me comfort – food. It has been my story for too many years to count. I eventually accepted my fate as a “cute chubby girl” and decided to stop caring so much. This was pretty much my way of numbing from the feelings of failure and “not being enough.” I also used food to numb from the pain and hurt I felt from broken relationships and feelings of loneliness. I guess you could say food has always been my constant friend. Does this story sound familiar?

Then one morning I met Melanie. What drew me to Melanie was her story. I found out that Melanie was just like me. She had struggled with her weight, just like me. She had tried and failed, just like me. She had felt hopeless and alone, just like me. However, Melanie had found a way to lose over 100 lbs. If she could do it, why not me? That was the first step. The idea of what was possible, even for me. After a few months went by, I finally talked myself into contacting her. So, I did. Due to my tight budget, I decided to meet with her a few times to ‘see how it would go.’ Little did I know that I would start a journey with Melanie that would be about so much more than losing weight.

Melanie has sat with me and listened to the things that have made me hurt the most in my life – the “why’s” to why I eat to numb. She has cried with me. She has comforted me. She has provided me with resources, books, TED Talks and more to help me work through what I was feeling. And yes, she has helped me learn how to manage what I eat. She has worked with me to help me transition my food intake according to what will keep me successful and not set me up for failure. I text her when I am having a bad day, a great day or anything in-between. She cheers me on and offers guidance when I slip.

To date I have lost 24 lbs. I know I still have a very long way to go, but I am not personally measuring my success just by the scale alone. I went to the doctors for the first time in many, many years. After working with Melanie, I am no longer pre-diabetic! In fact, I got a happy face from the doctor for all my lab tests! I have finally realized that being alive for my kids is worth it and now everyday I tell myself that I AM WORTH IT! I bet you haven’t said that to yourself for a long time, right?

It is not easy work. It is hard to deal with the things I have pushed down for so long. Sometimes it is even hard not to run to the freezer and have a pow wow with my old friends Ben & Jerry when I have had a stressful day. But dammit, it feels so much better to feel alive! It feels better to stop treating myself like I am not worth fighting for. It feels better to call Melanie and say, “Guess what Melanie?! I felt like crap today and wanted to stuff my face with chocolate and a loaf of french bread but I didn’t!!! Instead, I went for a walk outside with my daughter and said a prayer and I got through it!”

My journey is far from over. In fact, it is just beginning. But what I can tell you is that hiring Melanie was an answer to my prayers, literally. I needed someone to cheer me on, to confide in and to guide me. I needed a coach who had walked in my shoes and who knew exactly what it felt like to be overweight and overwhelmed. Why Intuitive Eating for Emotional Weight Loss you ask? 

My personal experience with emotional weight loss was beyond life-changing, it was life-saving as I had a plan to take my own life because I had lost all hope.  I want to share the invaluable knowledge and explosive joy with anyone ready for massive lifestyle change.  I packed on 253 pounds of pain onto my 5’1” frame for over eight years.  Disappointment, depression, and anxiety had slowly crept into my life and became my new norm.  I was an emotional eater and used food to numb the pain, disappear from the world, hide from my problems, and prove to myself just how much of a piece of shit I was.  I had a heinous sweet tooth and would go to sugary carb laden foods to drown out all emotions and check out from the world.  I would make a batch of raw cookie dough and eat it until my stomach hurt so bad I wanted to throw up, I had immense guilt or shame or it was all gone!  I even ate an entire baker’s dozen of Krispy Kreme donuts once!  I transformed my negative thoughts into healthy, productive, posite thoughts and did the innercise necessary to begin the journey to love myself.  I then got my nutrition down pat and had lost 60 pounds in 6 months without exercising.  Lastly, I incorporated exercise into my daily routine and went on to ultimately lose 103 pounds in 15 months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this retreat for women only?

This retreat is designed to be a co-ed experience with both men and women welcome to attend.  Accommodations will be separated with all women in a space and all men in another.

Where do I fly into?

Dallas/Forth Worth (DFW) or Dallas Love Field (DAL) are the closest airports to Guesthouse on the Lake and RV on the Lake.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, Keto items which are naturally gluten free will definitely be on the menu, but you may also make special requests for other nutrition strategies as well on your forms prior to arrival.

Do I have to have a roommate? – If not, how do I arrange that?

There is space for three people (three separate beds) in the shared main bedroom of the Guesthouse on the Lake and two people in the shared RV on the Lake (queen bed in bedroom and queen air mattress in main cabin area).  If you’d rather not have a roommate, you have the option of investing more money to have your own private quarters.  Email Melanie@ExplosiveJoy.com for more details.

How many bathrooms, showers, and baths are on site?

There is one bathroom and shower combo in the RV on the Lake.  There is one bathroom, shower, and bath combo in the Guesthouse on the Lake.  There is one bathroom and shower combo and one bathroom, shower, and bath combo for a total of two bathrooms in the main house. 

What is the weather like?

The weather in East Tawakoni, Texas in mid-May is typically warm with a light breeze with average highs of 84 degrees and lows of 63 degrees. 

What do I pack?
Pack comfortable clothing for both indoor and outdoor activities.  If you’re interested in using the pool, lake or taking a dip off the boat, pack a swimsuit.  Gentle morning yoga will be offered.  Bring some comfortable workout clothes if you’d like to participate.  You’ll need typical basic personal toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, brush, etc.  Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, towels, washcloths, handsoap, etc will be provided for you.  It is recommended that you bring a special journal and comfortable writing device if you’re a note taker.

Can you share EXACTLY what we’re doing every day?

There is a general guideline of the principles to be taught and experienced each day, however, some activities may take more or less time depending on the group.  Rest assured we will deeply address core issues to do our best to achieve at least one breakthrough. 

Will I have access to the Internet?

Yes, complimentary high speed internet is available at Guesthouse on the Lake and RV on the Lake.
